Paediatric (Children) Suspensions

Pediatric Compounding

Perhaps the two biggest challenges in pediatrics are:
1. A lack of availability of pediatric dosages and dosage forms
2. Patient compliance
This is where the compounding pharmacists at The Compounding Lab can be of service to some of our youngest customers. Family doctors and pediatricians are dedicated to addressing the unique needs of their young patients, and our compounding pharmacists possess the creativity to help serve those needs.

Lack of availability of pediatric dosages and dosage forms

The number of new drugs marketed in Australia continues to increase. However, most new drugs are not labeled for infants and children. When a drug is not specifically approved by TGA for use in infants and children, it is usually not available in a suitable dosage form. However, there is a very real need for therapeutic options in the pediatric population. Consequently, the "off-label" use of drugs is common in pediatric patients. Compounded formulations have an important role, especially in the treatment of infants and young children (those younger than 6 years of age) who are unable to swallow tablets or capsules. In addition, those patients require doses based on body size and weight. The fixed doses intended for adults are not appropriate for use in infants and children. Compounded formulations fill this need for pediatric patients.

Patient compliance

Compounded formulations open the door to a whole host of solutions that make taking medicine easier for infants and children. This may involve simply flavouring a liquid formula or making unique alternative dosage forms such as troches/lozenges, popsicles, gummy gels, chewing gums, lollipops, chocolates, puddings/Jell-O, or transdermal gels. The compounding pharmacists work with the doctor, parent, and most importantly, the patient to help make the medication-taking experience a more pleasant one.
The following are examples of solutions that we have used to improve the treatment of our pediatric customers. If you or someone you know has a child that would benefit from our specialty pediatric compounding and would like more information on our services, please contact us. We will be happy to discuss your questions and concerns.

Children whom suffer from any form of mental condition, whether it be ADHD, autism or simply a learning disability, may be the result of an intrinsic biochemical imbalance. This imbalance may involve certain biochemical pathways not functioning correctly due to nutritional deficiencies, gut and digestive problems, food allergies/intolerances, heavy metals including copper, etc. These imbalances can directly affect neurotransmitter production and thus brain function.
In order to help identify which biochemical pathways may be affected a comprehensive organic acids test should be performed. Other tests which may also help include stool analysis, heavy metal testing, ALCAT food allergies/intolerances, etc.
Once the results are obtained an individual nutrient combination treatment composing of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and co-factors can be specifically compounded in order to treat the offending biochemical imbalance for each specific patient.
In addition we have also formulated biomedical treatments in accordance to DAN and Pfeiffer protocols for the treatment of autism and many other mental conditions prescribed by appropriately trained practitioners. These include preparations that aid under methylators or over methylators, pyrroluria, MT primers, copper chelators and chelation therapy.
For more information on tests and treatments for these conditions you are required to log in to the free practitioners advice section.
To organise these tests you are required to book in for a consultation with one of our Practitioners. Once the results are obtained they will then specifically formulate a nutrient combination based on the test results to help rectify any biochemical imbalances detected.
