What is Compounding?

Compounding is the preparation of customised medication for specific patient needs. It has multiple benefits over traditional, commercially available medication. Compounding medicine is gaining popularity as more pharmacists and technicians work closely with doctors and their patients for a better treatment outcome.

The Compounding Lab follows the Department of Health’s Good Manufacturing Practices to ensure the best quality. Our Resonant Acoustic Mixer is a Professional Compounding Chemists of Australia (PCCA) innovator that sets us apart in quality compounding.

How does compounding benefit me?

Everyone is different, and compounding can provide medication that is unique and made just for you.  We can create medicine that is:

  • Free of your specific allergens (such as lactose, gluten, food colours)
  • To your required drug strength
  • In the dosage form most suitable to you
  • With flavour you find palatable
  • With a combination of your compatible medications into a singular form
  • With a combination of hormones into a singular form

What kind of prescription can be compounded?

Almost any kind of prescription can be compounded. This method of medicine creation is ideal for any patient requiring unique dosages and delivery devices, or quantity changes.

The Compounding Lab specialises in bio-identical hormones with multiple hormone combinations in a single dose; pain medication into liposomal bases to avoid unwanted side-effects of oral capsules; and tailor-made vitamins with unique combinations for your specific nutritional health.

How much does compounding cost?

Creating wellness is a journey that, when achieved, saves you money. Compounded formulations are exempt from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and Medicare and therefore are privately funded. When we dispense a compound, we discuss with you the most cost-effective delivery method and quantity for you. Please contact us to enquire into the potential savings for your medication.

Will my private health fund cover compounded medications?

Most health funds cover compounded medications, however some don’t.  Please check with your health fund first.

Is compounding legal and safe?

Compounding has been a traditional part of the healthcare system since the science of pharmacy began and is widely used today. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has stated that compounded prescriptions are both ethical and legal as long as they are prescribed by a licensed practitioner for the specific patient and compounded by a licensed pharmacy.

The Compounding Lab has been in operation since 2002 and undergoes Quality Care Pharmacy Program (QCPP) accreditation every 2 years though the Pharmacy Guild of Australia. We are a member of the PCCA and rely on our professional relationship with this peak body to maintain quality and innovation.

How long does it take to get my medication?

We understand creating wellness takes time and your health is our priority. Depending on the medication required, our turnaround time is between 24 and 48 hours. It is best to pre-order your prescription in advance. An original copy of the prescription is required before we can proceed with compounding. We can help manage your prescriptions for you with monthly SMS reminders of when your prescription is due to ensure your best health solutions.
